He referred to a war "that must be called for what it is," which he believes was launched by the United States and its allies, particularly Israel, against Iran. According to the head of government, the strikes targeting Iranian territory have provoked a response that could ignite the entire Gulf region. "We would be very naive to think that this will be limited to these events," he warned, calling for a clear-eyed assessment of the current dynamics.
Ousmane Sonko believes these military operations illustrate a profound deterioration of the international order. He denounces strikes carried out without a United Nations mandate, specifically mentioning the assassinations of foreign leaders. According to him, the world is witnessing a "return to the state of nature," marked by the weakening of international law and the primacy of might makes right. This shift, in his words, would jeopardize a global balance built up over nearly half a century.
The Strait of Hormuz at the heart of concerns
Beyond the military aspect, the Prime Minister emphasizes the major economic consequences. The Strait of Hormuz, through which between 30% and 40% of the world's oil passes, could become a strategic breaking point.
A prolonged disruption of this corridor would lead to a sharp rise in hydrocarbon prices, with cascading effects on inflation, investment, and everyday consumer goods, including food. Senegal, as a net importer of petroleum products, would not be spared from this exogenous shock.
For Ousmane Sonko, this crisis is part of a broader rivalry between power blocs. He specifically mentioned the rise of the BRICS, with China becoming increasingly dominant economically, technologically, and militarily. He believes that certain international interventions are part of a containment strategy aimed at curbing these emerging powers in the context of a transition to a multipolar world. Faced with the risks of escalation, particularly between nations possessing sophisticated arsenals, the Prime Minister called for a swift de-escalation "for the good of the world."
