Procès des supporters sénégalais au Maroc : Aly Ngouille Ndiaye juge les sanctions «très sévères»

Former minister Aly Ngouille Ndiaye has spoken out about the verdict handed down by the Moroccan justice system against the 18 Senegalese supporters arrested during the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Rabat, which pitted Senegal against Morocco.

Between analyzing the facts, expressing regret, and appealing to diplomacy, he called for the preservation of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Present in Morocco throughout the competition, Aly Ngouille Ndiaye condemned the disturbances that occurred during the match, stating that he had watched all six of the Lions' matches from the stands, matches marked by a strong mobilization of Senegalese supporters, particularly during the match against the DRC.

He also emphasized the support of the Moroccan public throughout the tournament, while acknowledging that the final presented a unique context. "Naturally, we could expect the Moroccans not to be with us that day. But I didn't think there could be such a breakdown," he confided this Sunday during the "Point de vue" program on RTS. For him, the frustration linked to certain refereeing decisions contributed to the heated exchange.

However, he considers the sanctions handed down against the 18 Senegalese, who received sentences ranging from three months to one year in prison and fines, to be "very severe," recalling the numerous postponements of the trial. "I think it's too much for the Senegalese," he said.

When asked about a possible "extension" of the final off the field, the former minister stated that Morocco's defeat "has not been accepted so far." "This extension outside the stadium must stop. The AFCON is over, Senegal won. Football should remain football," he insisted.

On the institutional level, the former minister points out that the judicial procedure is continuing, with the possibility for Senegal to appeal within ten days.

But beyond the legal option, Aly Ngouille Ndiaye insisted on the need for strong diplomatic action. "Whether there is an appeal or not, diplomacy must begin to play its role," he stated.

According to him, the Senegalese authorities have already shown their willingness to calm things down through calls for calm and initiatives undertaken.

Recalling the historical strength of relations between Dakar and Rabat, particularly in political, economic, and religious spheres, Aly Ngouille Ndiaye warned against the consequences of a stalemate. "We must not allow sport to create lasting tension between two countries that enjoy extraordinary relations," he cautioned.

For him, the objective must be clear: to preserve the friendship between the two nations and work towards the swift return of the detained youths. "The King can now have the final say and allow Senegal and Morocco to fully restore their relations. Football must remain football, quite simply," he concluded.

Sonko est allé faire de la politique politicienne à Rabat. S'il avait sollicité la clémence et le pardon auprès du roi, les peines ne seraient pas lourdes.
