Souleymane Jules Diop sur le décès de Halima Gadji : « Je pleure pour une inconnue parce qu’elle…»
The death of Senegalese actress Halima Gadji continues to evoke strong emotions in Senegal and beyond. Among the notable reactions, that of diplomat Souleymane Jules Diop testifies to the profound impact of the artist on Senegalese and African culture.
“I have never been so saddened by the death of an unknown person,” confides Souleymane Jules Diop. He says he never met Halima Gadji nor watched her films, but he measured her influence through the enthusiasm she aroused within UNESCO, where her African and European colleagues learned Wolof to follow her series, imitated her style and her clothing.
As Senegal's ambassador to this institution and chairman of the Group of African Ambassadors, he saw it as a source of national pride.
For Souleymane Jules Diop, the actress brought Senegalese television films to unprecedented heights, revealing Dakar as a major center for African television films, alongside Lagos.
An exposed fragility
The writer evokes the actress's wounds, linked to a difficult childhood, but above all deplores the way they were exposed and exploited. "We revealed them by throwing her to the wolves, trampling her like a piece of trash," he writes bitterly.
He sees in this tragedy the reflection of the collective flaws of a society where hatred and resentment threaten the very foundations of living together.
A call for national recognition
Souleymane Jules Diop concluded his tribute with a wish: that the President of the Republic, in his capacity as promoter and protector of the arts, "express the Nation's gratitude to Halima Gadji and honor her memory by placing the Order of Merit on her coffin".

Elle pouvait pas vivre longtemps dans une société comme le Sénégal où les droits des femmes et des enfants sont bafoués !
