Les révélations de Yékini sur son défunt entraîneur, Amadou Katy Diop

The emotion was palpable in Yékini's words when he spoke of Amadou Katy Diop. For the former King of the Arena, the deceased was not just a coach, but a true mentor whose influence profoundly marked his sporting and personal journey.

Recalling their first meeting, Yékini recounts that it all began in 1996 in Fatick. At that time, he only practiced simple wrestling when Amadou Katy Diop encouraged him to take a further step by joining wrestling with striking.

"He told me, 'You are a champion, you must come to Dakar.' He had seen in me a potential that many had not yet noticed," he recalls.

Convinced by his mentor's vision, Yékini decided to join the Dakar team, despite the numerous offers he received. It was a choice he never regretted, so strong was the bond of trust between them.

Beyond his technical skills, the former King of the Arenas especially remembers Amadou Katy Diop's human qualities.

"He was a good, calm, serene and deeply religious man. Throughout our time together, we never argued," he confided.

Yékini also revealed one of the working methods that characterized his mentor. As fights approached, Amadou Katy Diop made sure to protect his wrestler from any outside pressure.

"On Thursday, the last day of training, he would gather everyone together and say, 'If anyone has something to say to Yakhya, let them say it now.' He didn't want people coming to disturb me or give me last-minute instructions on the day of the fight," he explained.

Once they arrived at the stadium, the exchanges between the two men were reduced to the essentials.

"He would simply ask me, 'Ya, how are you feeling?' I would reply, 'I'm ready.' And that was it. After several months of preparation, he knew it was no longer time to talk, but to fight."

Through this testimony, Yékini paints a portrait of a man of vision, discipline, and wisdom. A discreet builder who helped shape one of the greatest careers in the history of Senegalese wrestling, and whose legacy will continue to inspire several generations of wrestlers.
