[Lumières de la Foi] Serigne Khadim Lô Gaydel : L'âme de Touba Bakhdad et le gardien du « Foulkou »
During this month of Ramadan, Seneweb continues its exploration of spiritual centers with its "Lights of Faith" series. For this new installment, we remain in Thiès, more precisely in the Touba Bakhdad neighborhood. In this atmosphere of devotion, reminiscent of the holy city of Touba, we discover the work of Serigne Khadim Lô Gaydel. Between the legacy of the caliphs and the fervor of the "Foulkou" (the Mouride brotherhood), we find a portrait of a guide whose actions illuminate the daily lives of the Mouride faithful.
In Touba Bakhdad, in the city of Thiès, the month of Ramadan takes on a special dimension. Under the guidance of Serigne Khadim Lô Gaydel, the faithful perpetuate a spiritual tradition deeply rooted in the legacy of the founder of Mouridism.
In this neighborhood of Thiès, life revolves around the rhythm of the blessed month. Recitals of xassida resonate from all sides, creating an atmosphere imbued with fervor. In front of Serigne Khadim Lô Gaydel's home, hundreds of disciples, seated under tents, pray and chant the writings of Serigne Touba in unison. In Touba Bakhdad, the atmosphere is reminiscent of the holy city of Touba. The Mouride tradition is fully perpetuated here. The talibés proudly wear Mouride attire: the men in "Baye Lahat" robes and the women in flowing garments in the symbolic colors of the brotherhood. All have come to continue the spiritual work of Serigne Khadim Lô during this period of Ramadan.
A devotion inherited from Serigne Touba
According to Abdoulaye Thiam, imam of the Touba Bakhdad mosque, Ramadan was a time of intense devotion for Serigne Touba. "When people think of Ramadan, they think of Serigne Touba, because it was the month during which he intensified his prayers and acts of worship," he explains. Serigne Khadim Lô Gaydel continues this tradition. Having settled in Bakhdad with the authorization of the religious authorities in Touba, he works for Islam and the Mouride brotherhood, placing particular emphasis on the spiritual activities of the holy month.
Since 2009, following the passing of Serigne Saliou Mbacké, he has been organizing "Foulkou" sessions, a recital of a xassida by Serigne Touba. This initiative received the approval of the then-Khalif General of the Mourides, Cheikh Sidy Mokhtar Mbacké, who gave him the "ndiguël" (religious instruction) to perpetuate this practice in Bakhdad, reports Imam Abdoulaye Thiam. According to him, the "Foulkou," a term meaning "a well-filled boat," is a secret drawn from the Holy Quran. In this religious poem, Serigne Touba sings the praises of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), expresses his gratitude to Allah, and offers prayers.
A model of virtue in service of the Mouride legacy
Close to the various Mouride caliphs, from Serigne Abdou Khadre Mbacké to the present day, Serigne Khadim Lô Gaydel bases his actions on respect for the recommendations of religious leaders. From a young age, he has maintained close ties with the family of Serigne Touba, thus strengthening his commitment to serving the Mouride spiritual heritage.
Serigne Khadim Lô Gaydel is much more than a guide; he embodies a model of virtue whose qualities immediately inspire admiration and affection. Every account of his captivating personality awakens a profound desire to meet him or reconnect with him, to benefit from his wisdom and benevolence. Each of his appearances illuminates hearts, strengthens faith, calms the mind, and brings genuine joy. His words enrich language and instill values, while his sermons guide us toward the best conduct. His preaching inspires, his philosophy elevates actions, and his enchanting poetry deepens love for the Creator.
