[Lumières de la Foi] Al Amine : Le serviteur de l'ombre devenu phare de la Tidjaniya
During this holy month of Ramadan, Seneweb continues to explore the lives of those who have brought renown to Islam in Senegal. For this new episode of "Lights of Faith," we focus on an unforgettable figure from the city of Maodo: Serigne Abdoul Aziz Sy Al Amine. A tireless spokesperson who became Caliph, he dedicated every breath of his 90 years to reconciliation, knowledge, and the organization of the community. A portrait of a man of immense influence, whose legacy continues to nourish hearts through the "Ramadan Academy."
Within the walls of the library of the religious city bearing his name, Serigne Assane Sy, grandson of El Hadji Malick Sy, spoke to Seneweb about the life and legacy of Serigne Abdoul Aziz Sy Al Amine, a prominent figure in the Tidiane brotherhood in Senegal.
From the outset, Serigne Assane Sy emphasizes the difficulty of speaking about such a scholar. "A man of God is comparable to an ocean that no one can cross," he recalls, to illustrate the spiritual depth and exceptional dimension of the one who was affectionately nicknamed "Al Amine."
Humility at the heart of erudition
Born in 1927, the son of Serigne Babacar Sy and Sokhna Astou Kane, he distinguished himself at a very young age by his deep-rooted attachment to religious knowledge and his precocious mastery of the Holy Quran. But beyond his immense erudition, it is his humility that truly impresses. Despite his prestigious position within the Maodo family, he never sought to profit from his status, preferring to define himself as a servant of religious transmission.
His life was a constant quest. Al Amine traveled the world to share the message of Islam, teaching divine guidance with disarming simplicity. This austerity, inspired by the life of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), led him to prioritize knowledge over material possessions. It is quite fitting that the library in the religious city of Tivaouane, a sanctuary of learning, now bears his name.
The founder of the "Ramadan Academy"
The blessed month of Ramadan held a central place in his spiritual life. Like his grandfather, he dedicated this period to the Tafsir (exegesis) of the Quran and to giving lectures. He is notably credited with the creation of the Ramadan Academy, a religious institution that marks the holy month each year.
Even in his advanced age, Al Amine made it a point of honor to lead these sessions and actively participate in the spiritual vigils of Laylat al-Qadr (the Night of Destiny). As coordinator of the activities of the Zawiya of El Hadji Malick Sy, he ensured the perpetuation of Mame Maodo's legacy with the precision of a watchmaker.
An apostle of solidarity
Ramadan was also, for him, a time to celebrate charity. Faithful to the principles of sharing, he redistributed almost all the donations and food he received to those in need. His home was a haven for the destitute, illustrating the mutual aid advocated by the Tariqa.
After a lifetime dedicated to faith and service to the community, Serigne Abdoul Aziz Sy Al Amine passed away in September 2017 at the age of 90. He leaves behind a tremendous void, but his Academy and library remain beacons for future generations seeking enlightenment.
