«Prendre le pouvoir sur son nafs » : Les précieux conseils de l’Imam Kanté pour le Ramadan

A large majority of the Senegalese Muslim community began Ramadan on Wednesday, February 18, 2026. To support the faithful during this period of devotion, Imam Ahmadou Makhtar Kanté offers a true spiritual and practical "user manual".

According to the Imam, this month is a unique opportunity: "a month of abstinence, the month commemorating the revelation of the Quran, a month of forgiveness, a month of answered prayers." He emphasizes that the greatest benefit to be gained from it is Taqwa (reverential fear), because fasting allows us to "take control over our nafs," this carnal soul which, left to itself, "inclines us to evil."

Resistance and discipline

The preacher emphasizes that fasting is a school of willpower. By refusing to break the covenant of obedience without a legal excuse, the believer strengthens their faith. "Fasting also teaches us to resist the insidious grip of advertising, which encourages overconsumption and excess," he explains. It is a time when the gates of paradise open and sins are forgiven, with the exception of major sins (al-kabâ-ir), which require sincere tawba (repentance).

Imam Kanté strongly encourages reconnecting with the Quran through reading and meditation. He emphasizes the importance of two key rituals: Suhur (the pre-dawn meal), which is a blessing and provides energy, and breaking the fast immediately after sunset, preferably with dates.

Charity and final vigilance

The Imam's "user manual" warns against certain pitfalls. He urges the faithful to avoid "the traps of ostentation, the harmful effects of the tongue... laziness, and overindulging at the breaking of the fast." For him, each day should be lived as if it were the last: "Let us consider it our last month of Ramadan!"

Finally, he emphasizes the need to intensify efforts during the last ten nights, which include Laylatul Qadr, and the necessity of solidarity. "Let us offer the iftar meal or its equivalent value according to our means," he advises, before reminding everyone of the obligation to pay Zakatul Fitr at the end of the month to "purify our fast of its shortcomings."
