Séminaires et juvénats au Sénégal : L’État invité à jouer la carte de l’équité face aux financements des daaras
Ephrem Manga, a member of Présence Chrétienne, calls for fairness in the support and guidance provided to the various religious training institutions in the country. In a publication by the Union of Senegalese Clergy (UCS) entitled "Seminaries and Junior Seminaries in Senegal: A Member of Présence Chrétienne Calls for Fairness in Funding for Daaras," he appeals to state authorities to guarantee equal treatment for all religious educational institutions in the country.
"It is with genuine joy and relief that I see the State investing in organizing and financing the daaras in our beloved country. The Minister of Education's tour of religious cities, in preparation for the national conference on daaras, as well as the funding granted, demonstrates a strong commitment stemming from a national desire, which will allow for better organization of these centers in Senegal, a reduction in the number of talibés on the streets, and quality religious learning, coupled with professional training.
Furthermore, the funding that the Franco-Arab Nouroul Islam Institute has just received will contribute more, I am certain, to the goal of achieving food self-sufficiency in our beloved nation.
However, dear authorities, this is the place to inform you of the situation of Catholic seminaries in our secular country, with a view to the fairness advocated by yourselves.
Indeed, Catholic seminaries and junior seminaries face colossal challenges regarding their operation and the rehabilitation of their infrastructure.
As a reminder, a seminary, like a daara, aims to train future Catholic religious (priests and brothers). Senegal has three major seminaries as well as several junior seminaries dedicated to the training of religious sisters, which receive no foreign funding.
A recent statement from the bishops of Senegal calls for an annual collection in parishes and an individual act of solidarity to fund projects in these three major seminaries, aiming to make them more self-sufficient. In previous years, collections have only been able to cover the basic operating costs of these institutions.
It is important to point out that these Catholic religious training houses in Senegal are almost exclusively run by parishes, lay people and people of goodwill.
Therefore, Mr. President of the Republic and esteemed authorities, I draw your attention to these major events for the Catholic religion, so that, in the name of fairness and secularism in our Republic, the State may respond in an inclusive manner to support all religious educational institutions of diverse religious persuasions, whose mission is to ensure the continuity of the formation of ministers of their faith. Any national support should therefore benefit and be available to all.
