Sénégal : La Jama’atou Ibadou Rahmane appelle à la préservation des valeurs morales et à la responsabilité sociétale
In a context marked by heated debates on societal values in Senegal, the Jama'atou Ibadou Rahmane (JIR) has published a solemn appeal for the preservation of moral values and the strengthening of collective responsibility. Drawing on religious references, the organization reaffirms its commitment to what it considers the spiritual, cultural, and legal foundations of Senegalese society.
In its statement, the JIR expresses its concern about what it describes as a resurgence of acts "contrary to the religious and cultural values" of the country. It believes that certain social developments and public discourse are contributing to a questioning of traditionally accepted moral standards, which, according to the JIR, is causing growing concern among a significant segment of the population.
The organization points out that, under Senegalese law, same-sex sexual relations are a criminal offense, punishable by up to five years in prison and fines. It also refers to recent arrests made by the defense and security forces in various parts of the country, citing accusations of "unnatural acts" and other related offenses.
An appeal to the authorities and social actors
In light of this situation, the JIR calls on public authorities to "fully assume their responsibilities" in order to protect young people and preserve Senegal's religious and cultural identity. Specifically, it calls for strengthening the legal framework concerning public morality; rigorously enforcing existing laws; implementing national awareness and moral education programs involving schools, families, and the media; greater involvement of religious and traditional authorities in public policies related to ethical issues; and promoting responsible civic vigilance and measured use of social media to avoid stigmatization and unfounded accusations.
Between societal debate and national cohesion
Beyond its recommendations, the JIR emphasizes the need to preserve social cohesion and avoid any developments that could fuel tensions. It calls for collective mobilization around the values it considers fundamental to national identity.
This new appeal thus revives the debate on the balance between religious traditions, legal framework and societal developments in Senegal, in a context where issues related to individual freedoms and social norms continue to generate discussion and controversy within public opinion.
