Tivaouane : Le SG du Ministère du Commerce rassure sur la disponibilité des denrées et le bon approvisionnement des marchés
Organized in anticipation of Mawlid-Al-Naby, by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, an inspection mission carried out at the markets of the capital of Tidianiya, Tivaouane, made it possible to ensure the availability of foodstuffs and their good supply for the Gamou festivities.
During this visit, the Secretary General of the Ministry, Seydina Ababacar Sadikh Ndiaye, at the head of a large delegation, returned to the said mission, focusing on "the supply of basic necessities (rice, sugar, oil); the stock situation and the evolution of prices of highly demanded horticultural products (onions, potatoes, carrots, fruits and vegetables).
The stated objective was to ensure sufficient supply for the celebration of the Prophet's (PBUH) birth, which attracts a large number of pilgrims each year. The ministerial delegation noted satisfactory availability of basic foodstuffs and adequate market supplies of horticultural products. "The presence of imported onions, a strategic measure decided to supplement the supply, made it possible to avoid any price increases or stock shortages, in a context of declining local production," notes Seydina Ababacar Sadikh Ndiaye.
He also explained: "This mission is part of the preparations for Maouloud, scheduled for September 4, 2025. For several months, we have been engaged in preparatory work in collaboration with producers, traders, the DCI, the ARM and all the structures concerned."
Regarding onions, he recalled that the end of local production made imports essential to maintain supply. The national production, estimated at 450,000 tonnes, was partly sold on the domestic market, while another portion was exported. However, to secure supplies as the Gamou approaches, "it was necessary to open the market to imports."
The Ministry of Commerce delegation urged traders to keep prices within regulatory limits, recalling that economic controls will continue to ensure compliance with the guidelines. Seydina Ababacar Sadikh Ndiaye noted that this mission is part of the ongoing efforts carried out during major religious events in the country to secure supplies to Senegalese markets.
Regarding the strengthening of the market surveillance system, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Commerce praised the excellent work carried out by consumer volunteers.
