Christianity, with its two billion followers worldwide, is a religion founded on faith in Jesus Christ and the Bible as holy book. However, this shared faith has not prevented the religion from dividing into major branches: Catholicism, Orthodoxy, and Protestantism. These denominations, born from historical schisms, have developed their own dogmas, hierarchies, and liturgies.
Catholicism: Unity and Tradition
Catholicism is characterized by its hierarchical, pyramidal structure, with the Pope in Rome as the universal authority. Catholics recognize seven sacraments and place great importance on the Virgin Mary (particularly through the dogma of the Immaculate Conception) as well as the veneration of saints. They also believe in purgatory, defined as a state of purification of the soul after death.
Orthodoxy: Eastern tradition and icons
Orthodox Christians share with Catholics the theology of the sacraments, but do not recognize the universal authority of the Pope or the dogma of purgatory. Orthodox spirituality is deeply marked by the traditions of the early centuries and by the use of icons, considered "windows onto the divine." They also celebrate the Theotokos (Mother of God).
Protestantism: the Bible as the sole authority
Born from the Reformation, Protestantism relies on the Bible as its sole authority, according to the principle of "Sola Scriptura" (the Bible alone). This movement rejects the papal hierarchy and the veneration of saints. It simplifies worship and generally recognizes only two sacraments: baptism and the Eucharist (or Holy Communion).
In conclusion, these branches of Christianity, although distinct, share a common faith in Jesus Christ. Each has developed its own traditions and practices, but all seek to follow the teachings of the Gospel.
