Cyberattaques : pourquoi le Sénégal est exposé, un expert explique tout
In an interview with L'Observateur, cybersecurity expert Mamadou Kor warns of the now inevitable nature of cyberattacks targeting public institutions. For him, "the question is no longer whether an institution will be attacked, but when." The expert emphasizes: "This is to say that no one is safe from cyberattacks today."
According to him, the recent attacks against the Directorate of File Automation (DAF) and Senegal Digital are due to a combination of geopolitical, criminal, and financial factors. These strategic structures are prime targets because they centralize highly sensitive data related to citizens' identities, national security, and major government projects. The accelerated digitization of public services, coupled with technical vulnerabilities, sometimes limited resources, and still-improving governance, increases the country's exposure to attacks.
The potential consequences are serious, points out the source speaking to the newspaper from the Future Media Group: identity theft and usurpation, financial extortion, state espionage, disinformation campaigns, but also the paralysis of essential services such as water, energy, transportation, and the issuance of administrative documents. Ultimately, these incidents could lead to an erosion of citizens' trust in public institutions.
Faced with this growing threat, Mamadou Kor advocates for the creation of a National Cybersecurity Agency (ANSSI), tasked with leading the national cybersecurity strategy. With powers similar to those of the General Inspectorate of State (IGE), this agency would be responsible for imposing strict security standards on the public and private sectors, monitoring their implementation, and updating cybersecurity legislation currently considered outdated.
