Affaire du navire-tanker « Mersin » : Les autorités sénégalaises à pied d’œuvre pour éviter un drame maritime
The situation surrounding the tanker "Mersin" is evolving in a controlled manner. According to a press release from the Autonomous Port of Dakar (PAD) dated April 13, 2026, the securing and unloading operations are continuing in accordance with the plan established by the Senegalese maritime authorities.
Since the incident on board, a multi-phase technical intervention has been deployed under the supervision of the PAD, in coordination with the national navy, the High Authority for Maritime Security (HASSMAR) and the National Agency for Maritime Affairs (ANAM).
Actions already taken include assessing the ship's condition, securing its structure, and carrying out technical operations to mitigate risks. Teams have notably sealed breaches identified in the engine room to prevent water infiltration, followed by pumping operations to reduce risks on board.
An important step has been taken with the effective start of the unloading of the cargo, which began on April 6, 2026. This sensitive operation, carried out in consultation with the ship's managers and the relevant authorities, constitutes a major step forward in the management of the incident, in particular to limit the risks of pollution of the marine environment.
Looking ahead, the technical teams are already working on the next phase of operations. Once unloading is complete, the next step will be to define, with the ship's owners, the arrangements for towing it back to its home port, where final repairs will need to be carried out.
The maritime authorities, namely HASSMAR, PAD, the national navy and ANAM, assure that they remain fully mobilized to carry out this large-scale operation in optimal safety conditions.
