8 décès, 33 cas, nouvelles mesures : Le ministère de la Santé fait le point sur le Mpox et la Fièvre de la Vallée du Rift
In recent weeks, Senegal has been facing outbreaks of monkeypox (MPOX) and Rift Valley fever. A total of 33 cases have been confirmed, including 5 cases of MPOX and 28 cases of Rift Valley fever.
To date, eight deaths have been confirmed, all from Rift Valley fever, all of which were reported in the Saint-Louis region. A meeting was held in the 300-year-old city, with new measures to combat the viral disease. Here is the full update from the Ministry of Health.
Update on the Mpox and Rift Valley Fever (RVF) epidemics
Senegal is currently facing two simultaneous epidemics: Mpox and Rift Valley Fever (RVF).
Since the first case of Mpox was confirmed on August 22, 2025, five confirmed cases have been recorded, all located in the Dakar region. No deaths have been reported. To date, one patient has been declared cured and four are under treatment in the infectious diseases department of Fann Hospital, with a favorable clinical outcome. In addition, 52 contact persons have been identified and are being closely monitored.
RVF, a viral disease transmitted primarily by mosquitoes and contact with infected animals, has been detected in the Saint-Louis region since September 21, 2025. To date, Senegal has 28 confirmed cases, including eight deaths. The epidemiological investigation identified 90 exposed individuals, four of whom developed the disease.
After visiting Saint-Louis this Sunday, the Minister of Health and Public Hygiene chaired the meeting of the National Epidemic Management Committee (CNGE) on Monday, September 29, 2025.
At the end of this meeting, major guidelines were formulated, relating to:
in particular on:
-strengthening the partnership with other sectors as part of the response; --strengthening the epidemiological surveillance system in the regions bordering Saint-Louis;
- the intensification of communication aimed at populations;
-the consolidation of community engagement in the response.
The Ministry calls on the population to be vigilant, to scrupulously respect preventive measures and to actively collaborate with health workers and community relays to contain these epidemics. It invites each citizen to play their full role in this collective fight."
