The National Order of Physicians of Senegal published its annual report on the administrative status of registered practitioners for the current fiscal year yesterday, Friday, October 3, 2025, in Dakar. The figures reveal a worrying reality: out of a total of 5,675 registered physicians, only 2,155, or 38%, are up to date with their obligations.

A rate deemed alarming by the profession's regulatory authorities. For the president of the Order, Dr. Jean François Diène, these figures constitute a warning signal. He also notes significant disparities between sections A and B. "The gaps are significant between the two main sections of the Order. Section A, which includes the majority of doctors with 4,805 registered members, displays a compliance rate of 37%. On the other hand, Section B, more restricted with 870 registered members, presents a better level of regularity, reaching 42%," he says.

Provisionally registered doctors are particularly in difficulty

The situation is even more critical among provisionally registered practitioners, whose compliance with obligations is capped at 26.8%. This low rate reflects administrative fragility and a lack of institutional anchoring, which could harm their sustainable integration into the health system, according to Dr. Diène. He also highlights the difference in compliance according to nationality: "Senegalese doctors, numbering 4,536, have a regularity rate of 40%, compared to 30% for foreign practitioners (1,139 registered). A gap of 10 points that raises questions about the administrative barriers and support systems existing for non-national doctors."

Thus, the president of the Order issued a firm call for regularization: "The medical profession must remain organized and rigorous. Updating obligations is not a mere formality; it guarantees ethics and the regulation of practice," he said. Dr. Diène invites all practitioners concerned to comply as soon as possible, in order to strengthen the credibility of the Order and improve the quality of medical service in Senegal.
