[Dossier 2/6] Malnutrition à Diourbel : L’abandon des traitements encore préoccupant
"I had already started treatment for my son CAB Diouf at the pediatrics department of the Diourbel Health Center, but unfortunately I had to interrupt it due to a lack of sufficient resources to continue the care," confessed Ndèye Awa, mother of CAB Diouf. Like many other families, she acknowledges that her child was "lost from sight" in the care system.
According to public health specialist and nutritionist Dr. Ibrahima Fall, who is also the nutrition focal point for the Diourbel district, many malnourished children in this area are unable to complete their treatment due to a lack of financial resources.
To reverse this trend, a new strategy has been in place since 2020. It involves treating children with uncomplicated moderate acute malnutrition (MAM) directly at the community level. "The goal is to bring services closer to the population and reduce the dropout rate," said the nutrition assistant from the NGO Helen Keller International (HKI), whom we met at the Diourbel Regional Health Directorate (DRS). Fatma Wade added: "We have evaluated this strategy and are currently in the scaling-up phase as part of the Multisectoral Strategic Nutrition Plan (PSMN)."
She emphasizes that in the fight against malnutrition, managing abandonment remains a challenge. "When it comes to children under two months old, we proceed with a readmission. But beyond that, it becomes more complicated. And, we either talk about readmission after abandonment, or a new admission. This makes the care more cumbersome," she explains.

Sa jeunesse est hors du pays pour soutenir leurs familles et Touba l'a carrément phagocyté. Les femmes restées dans le patelin sont assez vulnérables et pas assez conscientes que leur situation ne leur permet pas d'entretenir correctement leurs enfants. Il faut aller dans le sens de leur donner l'opportunité d'avoir de petites activités génératrices de revenus pour tenir.
