Dr Ndèye Mbacké Kane : une Sénégalaise à la tête de la lutte africaine contre les maladies tropicales négligées
African public health now has a new leading figure from Senegal. Dr. Ndèye Mbacké Kane has been appointed chair of the steering committee of ESPEN, the World Health Organization's (WHO) Special Programme for the Elimination of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) for the African Region. The announcement was made in Brazzaville, during the committee's 10th meeting.
This appointment marks international recognition of Senegal's leadership in healthcare and acknowledges a career firmly rooted in the fight against these diseases, which still affect millions of people on the continent. It is worth noting that Dr. Ndèye Mbacké Kane previously served as coordinator of the National Program for the Control of Neglected Tropical Diseases in Senegal.
A physician and renowned public health specialist, Dr. Ndèye Mbacké Kane has dedicated a large part of her career to NTDs, including lymphatic filariasis, schistosomiasis, onchocerciasis, trachoma, and soil-transmitted helminthiasis. These diseases, closely linked to poverty and limited access to clean water and healthcare, weigh heavily on the most vulnerable communities.
Created by WHO Africa, ESPEN (Expanded Special Project for Elimination of Neglected Tropical Diseases) plays a central role in the regional coordination of this fight. The program supports countries in the planning, implementation, and monitoring of elimination strategies, working closely with governments, technical and financial partners, and civil society organizations.
Beyond the individual aspect, this appointment sends a strong signal to Senegal, whose public health expertise is increasingly sought after internationally. It also illustrates the growing influence of African experts in decision-making bodies, at a time when the continent is advocating for homegrown solutions tailored to its specific realities. Today, the elimination of NTDs is recognized as a crucial driver of development, inequality reduction, and social justice.
