Enfants atteints de cancer : Le plaidoyer fort d'Absa Faye
To mark World Childhood Cancer Day, celebrated on Sunday, February 15, 2026, the Yaayou Tidiane association organized an afternoon of mobilization and solidarity in support of children with cancer, under the theme "Children Facing Cancer: Understanding, Acting, Supporting." The ceremony was presided over by First Lady Absa Faye, who reaffirmed her personal commitment to supporting sick children and their families.
More than 1,000 new cases per year
In Senegal, more than 1,000 new cases of pediatric cancer are diagnosed each year, according to official data. Faced with this reality, the event primarily aimed to raise funds to finance the association's programs and ensure comprehensive, sustainable, and compassionate care. Among the priorities: combating treatment abandonment, particularly by covering the costs of the Parents' House and certain medical treatments; providing educational support to enable affected children to continue their studies despite their illness; and supporting the care of young Khalifa, currently undergoing treatment in Turkey, whose medical expenses have already reached nearly 55 million CFA francs.
In an emotional speech, the First Lady recalled that childhood cancer "goes beyond the medical dimension" by profoundly impacting families and the entire social environment.
She praised the courage of the sick children, paid tribute to the families and expressed her gratitude to the caregivers and volunteers.
Absa Faye also highlighted the need for collective mobilization to improve access to care and strengthen psychosocial support.
The godmother of the day also highlighted the importance of the ten-year national cancer control program announced by the President of the Republic, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, as a strategic turning point in the public response to this disease.
A decade of concrete actions
The event also marked the 10th anniversary of the Yayou Tidiane association, founded in 2016 by Dieynaba Kane. Since its creation, it has supported more than a thousand children and numerous families.
Among its major achievements, we note the support of 115 children over the period 2024-2025; the opening in 2023 in Guédiawaye of the first Parents' House intended to accommodate mothers coming from the interior of the country during the treatment of their children.
A solidarity destined to grow
The meeting brought together healthcare professionals, representatives from associations, and institutional partners to discuss improving the care of pediatric cancers. It concluded with a fundraising cocktail reception where every contribution directly supports the association's programs.
Beyond the symbolism, this mobilization reminds us that the fight against childhood cancers relies on a sustained collective commitment, so that no child faces the disease alone.
