Fièvre de la Vallée du Rift : « Il est impératif de cuire correctement la viande, de faire bouillir le lait et ...»

In an interview with Le Soleil, Dr. Mathioro Fall, head of the Animal Health Protection Division at the Veterinary Services Directorate of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Livestock, provides an update on the Rift Valley fever situation in Senegal and the prevention measures implemented.

The Animal Health Protection Division is responsible for monitoring animal diseases, implementing vaccination campaigns and monitoring animal welfare, ensuring compliance with health and safety standards in breeding practices.

Regarding the current epidemic, Dr. Fall explains that Rift Valley fever is a viral zoonosis that can be transmitted from animals to humans. "Currently, human outbreaks are located only in Saint-Louis, while the virus is circulating among sheep, goats, and cattle in five villages in this region," he explains. The epidemic therefore remains confined to this geographical area.

To limit the spread, the Ministry of Livestock has taken several measures: strengthening animal surveillance, vaccination campaigns in high-risk areas, treating animals with repellents to reduce transmission by insects and raising awareness among farmers about hygiene and precautionary measures.

The national daily's source also warns against consuming raw animal products. "Contamination from animals to humans occurs mainly through direct contact with sick animals or through the consumption of unpasteurized milk. It is therefore essential to cook meat properly, boil milk, and avoid all contact with sick animals," he emphasizes. He also recommends protecting yourself from insect bites and contacting a veterinarian immediately in the event of sick animals or abortions.

The head of the Division finally points out that clandestine slaughter poses a major risk of transmission. "Before any slaughter, it is imperative to obtain the approval of a veterinarian to ensure that the animal presents no danger for human consumption," he concludes.
