Santé : 2 500 recrutements, 65 milliards F CFA d’investissements et réformes structurelles annoncés
The health sector is about to undergo a new phase of transformation. Speaking to the press on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, the Minister of Health, Ibrahima Sy, detailed a series of measures concerning human resources, infrastructure, and the governance of the health system.
Among the key announcements is the special recruitment of 2,500 medical and paramedical staff, including doctors, midwives, and nurses. According to the minister, this measure aims to correct the imbalances between healthcare personnel and administrative staff, while also strengthening healthcare structures.
Regularizations and ongoing programs
The minister also discussed the World Bank-supported program, which has mobilized over 900 staff. The government has already disbursed 5 billion CFA francs, ensuring staff salaries for 2025, with ongoing payments continuing after their contracts expire.
In parallel, the reclassification of 1,611 senior health technicians is being processed, with the files having been forwarded to the Civil Service.
Regarding contractors, Ibrahima Sy indicated that a need of approximately 8 billion CFA francs has been identified for their coverage, with discussions underway with the Ministry of Finance.
The Minister of Health also presented several structuring projects, including the revision of the Health Code, hospital reform and the updating of the national health map.
In this context, a health promotion department is being established. The decree is already drafted, according to the minister, who emphasized a paradigm shift: prioritizing prevention over simply treating illnesses. "Many diseases can be prevented," he stressed.
65 billion CFA francs to modernize equipment
In terms of infrastructure, the government plans to invest 65 billion CFA francs to strengthen the technical capacity of healthcare facilities. This program covers medical imaging, laboratories, and various essential equipment. The objective is twofold: to improve the quality of care at the local level and to reduce medical evacuations to major hospitals.
Through these various measures, Ibrahima Sy advocates a comprehensive reform of the health system combining strengthening of human resources, modernization of equipment and strategic reorientation towards prevention.
The government claims to want to correct the structural imbalances in the sector and sustainably improve access to healthcare for the population.
