VIH: Le Dr Safiétou Thiam dévoile les chiffres réels et les zones de vulnérabilité
Invited to the RTS1 evening news program, Dr. Safiétou Thiam, Executive Secretary of the National AIDS Control Council (CNLS), provided an update on the epidemiological situation in Senegal. This intervention comes amid a tense media climate, marked by the debate surrounding the transmission of the virus following a sex scandal involving several prominent figures.
According to figures released by Dr. Safiétou Thiam, Senegal has approximately 47,000 people living with HIV. The profile of the epidemic reveals that more than half of the patients are women, while children account for fewer than 3,000 cases. The Executive Secretary, however, sought to reassure the public regarding medical care, stating that 90% of those diagnosed are receiving antiretroviral treatment, access facilitated by the government's efforts to provide free and decentralized care.
Dr. Thiam identified the most vulnerable population segments, including homosexuals, sex workers, and injection drug users. Geographically, she noted that "cross-border areas, particularly those in the South and Southeast, as well as mining areas," remain the most vulnerable due to high population mobility.
In response to the rumors, the head of the National AIDS Control Program (CNLS) reiterated that the virus is not transmitted randomly. She reminded everyone of the three official modes of transmission: sexual contact, blood contact, and mother-to-child transmission. Emphasizing prevention, she recommended regular testing and the use of condoms. Finally, she deplored the circulation of "numerous false claims about AIDS," which fuel a stigma that is detrimental to patient care. She called for increased awareness campaigns based on scientific facts to avoid jeopardizing the progress made in the national fight against the virus.
