Hôpital Matlaboul Fawzeyni de Touba : "60 naissances par jour et 130 000 personnes consultées par an
The Matlaboul Fawzeyni National Hospital Center in Touba organized a meeting for the media on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, followed by a guided tour. The event aimed to strengthen communication and raise awareness of the services offered to the public.
The Director General, Dr Massamba Thioro Sall, presented the institution's impressive figures and its development plans.
During the guided tour organized in the center's meeting room at 9 a.m., Dr. Massamba Thioro Sall first presented the new R+3 building inaugurated a few months ago.
"Today, it was perfectly normal for us to be able to visit the new R+3 building that the State of Senegal has put in place, which we opened a few months ago, worth fifteen billion CFA francs," said the Director General.
This new gem boasts state-of-the-art equipment: "We have nine intensive care beds, six operating rooms, a maternity ward, and surgery. It was only right that we present this gem, which belongs to you," he added.
The Director then revealed the impressive scale of the institution's activity. "The Matlaboul Fawzeyni National Hospital Center in Touba receives an average of one hundred and thirty thousand people per year," Dr. Sall stated.
Regarding surgical procedures, the figures are just as impressive: "We perform seven thousand surgical procedures per year," he indicated.
The hospital's maternity ward is experiencing particularly intense activity. "We perform forty deliveries and about twenty cesarean sections daily, especially during peak times," explained the Director General.
However, Dr. Sall wanted to correct these figures upwards following information from the head of the maternity ward: "The head of the maternity ward has just confirmed to us that this wasn't just the peak period; it's almost become something that happens daily. So it's almost sixty births per day, to give you an idea of the volume of work we're doing."
An overcrowded emergency room that turns no one away
Dr. Massamba Thioro Sall also emphasized the hospital's emergency room reception policy. "In the emergency room, whether it's a medical emergency, a pediatric emergency, or a gynecological emergency, we take everyone who comes to the hospital, we take everyone," he stated.
The Director acknowledged the difficulties associated with this policy of accepting all patients: “Yes, capacity is limited, but we do not refuse access to people who need urgent care. And that is why we are sometimes overbooked, because with a capacity of twenty, we can go up to two hundred, because we take in all the patients who come here, especially in emergencies.”
Dr. Sall then spoke about the hospital's expansion and the new services that will be launched soon.
"We are in the process of drafting the new institutional project, which is the hospital's strategic plan for the next five years," he announced.
Regarding recent achievements, the Director stated: "Three months ago, we launched the interventional radiology service, which did not previously exist in the area."
The most ambitious project will be launched in March. "In March, we will follow up with spinal endoscopy," revealed Dr. Sall.
He emphasized the exceptional nature of this new service: "We will invite doctor friends from abroad, and with the doctors who are here—I'm talking about neurologists—we will obviously invite all the neurologists in Senegal because this will be a new service here in Senegal, but even in West Africa."
The Director added: "We will even invite doctors from Ivory Coast to come here to the Matlaboul Fawzeyni National Hospital Center, so that we can set up this service which is extremely important for the population."
