Infections sexuellement transmissibles : Explosion des cas chez les jeunes

During an awareness-raising workshop organized by the Association of Journalists in Health, Population, and Development (AJSPD) in partnership with the Directorate of Maternal and Child Health (DSME), Maïmouna Samb, a midwife at the DSME, presented alarming figures on sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV among adolescents and young people. “Between 2018 and 2021, Senegal recorded 801,176 cases of STIs, including 16.5% among 15-19 year-olds and nearly 30% among 20-24 year-olds, illustrating the high exposure of young people to the risks associated with unprotected sexual behavior,” she said. She added: “New HIV infections are declining overall, but they are increasing alarmingly among 15-24 year-olds, from 168 cases in 2017 to 227 in 2022, an increase of 35%.” »

Beyond the figures, Ms. Samb highlighted the serious health and social consequences of STIs: infertility, cervical cancer, pregnancy complications, mother-to-child transmission, as well as psychological aftereffects linked to stigma. To reverse this trend, she emphasized the importance of prevention, including regular condom use, better hygiene, abstinence, and appropriate support for adolescents in health facilities. She also called on the media to disseminate reliable and accessible information to break the taboos surrounding these issues.
