Octobre rose : Kédougou se mobilise contre le cancer du col de l’utérus

The Kédougou region is fully committed to the national effort to combat cervical and breast cancer through the annual Pink October campaign. This initiative, which combines awareness raising, screening, and advocacy, aims to reduce mortality from these female cancers, which remain a major public health problem.

A silent but deadly disease

Cervical cancer is one of the most common cancers among women in Senegal. According to specialists, its progression is often silent and diagnosis occurs at an advanced stage. In Kédougou, as in many rural areas, the remoteness of specialized health facilities and the lack of knowledge about prevention methods increase women's vulnerability.

Pink October: a month to raise awareness and take action

Throughout October, health facilities, in partnership with local authorities and women's associations, are organizing free screening sessions, educational talks, and communication campaigns. The goal is twofold: to encourage women to get screened regularly and to encourage vaccination against the human papillomavirus (HPV), the main risk factor for cervical cancer.

The Regional Director of Health, Dr. Ababacar Mbaye, recalls that "early detection saves lives. The earlier the disease is detected, the higher the chances of recovery. We invite all women, especially those aged 25 to 55, to take advantage of this campaign."

Women's groups on the front line

In several municipalities in the region, women's groups play a key role in community mobilization. By organizing village talks, they help break down taboos surrounding reproductive health. "Many women are still unaware that a simple test can prevent this cancer. We must inform and reassure them," says Aïssatou Diallo, president of a women's association in Bandafassi.

A call for solidarity

Beyond medical facilities, Pink October is also a moment of solidarity. Marches, conferences, and sporting activities are planned to mark the commitment of the population. Local authorities and development partners are calling for a general mobilization to break the silence surrounding cervical cancer and guarantee every woman the right to prevention and care.

Towards a future without cervical cancer

While the fight remains arduous, health professionals believe that with the vaccination of young girls, regular access to screening, and adequate support, it is possible to significantly reduce cases of cervical cancer in the Kédougou region. During this month of Pink October, the message is clear: prevent, screen, and raise awareness to save lives.

Vos choses tuent merci
