Santé maternelle et infantile : « Un État souverain doit être capable d’assurer la santé de sa population », (Experte)
In a global context marked by the scarcity of financial resources and the decline of public development aid, a dialogue on innovation in maternal and child health was held this Friday, October 31, 2025 in Dakar.
He brought together stakeholders from the health system around the central theme of "Facing Decreasing International Aid and Resource Scarcity." Participants emphasized the need for increased mobilization of domestic funding for health and nutrition. "A sovereign state must be able to ensure the health of its population, even in a context of economic constraints," Dr. Ndeye Astou Badiane reminded everyone, stressing the urgent need for strong political commitment to guarantee the sustainability of achievements.
Several initiatives were presented as levers for change. Among them was the production of local flours from available agricultural products, which would both combat child malnutrition and support the economic empowerment of women.
The stakeholders also advocated for an integrated approach linking health, nutrition and economic development in order to break the cycle of vulnerability.
The dialogue also highlighted the growing role of community health insurance and mutual societies in providing coverage for vulnerable populations. These mechanisms, supported by the government and its partners, help reduce out-of-pocket household expenses and improve access to care, particularly for pregnant women and children.
In parallel, social and economic support programs, such as cash transfers and income-generating activities, have been praised for their positive impact on household health.
The meeting also saw the notable presence of the Association of Journalists for Health and Development (AJSPD), chaired by Eugène Kaly. Mr. Kaly emphasized the essential role of the media in promoting public health and raising awareness among the population about issues related to maternal and child health. He stressed that the commitment of these specialized journalists contributes to strengthening the accountability of decision-makers, highlighting local initiatives, and fostering constructive public debate on health policies.
This meeting organised by Global Health Strategy, in partnership with Ejicom, and the Association of Journalists in Health and Development also highlighted new approaches to strengthen the health sovereignty of Senegal and West Africa.
