Santé : Plaidoyer pour une dose unique du vaccin contre le HPV au Sénégal
In Dakar, the president of the National Association of Women Doctors of Senegal (AFEMS), Professor Fatou Samba Ndiaye, called for the adoption of a single-dose vaccination schedule against human papillomavirus (HPV).
According to her, this strategy would allow the country to get closer to the goals set by the World Health Organization (WHO), which recommends vaccinating nine out of ten girls.
During an advocacy workshop focused on strengthening vaccination coverage, Ms. Ndiaye explained that the use of two doses posed logistical difficulties and hindered reaching target populations. "A single dose would give us better coverage by simplifying the process," she stated.
The WHO considers that a single injection offers robust protection, equivalent to the two-dose regimen, for girls and young women aged 9 to 20. This approach aims to accelerate the prevention of cervical cancer, of which approximately 1,400 cases are diagnosed each year in Senegal.
The president of AFEMS also emphasized that the vaccination coverage rate remains far below the 90% recommended by the WHO. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the country was on track to reach 80%, but progress has been jeopardized.
She therefore insists on the need to relaunch the campaign in order to protect more young girls.
Finally, APS concludes, Ms. Ndiaye noted regional disparities: approximately 60% coverage in the south, 30% in the center, and 40% in the north of the country. These differences, she said, underscore the urgent need for a simplified and more inclusive strategy.
