Pénuries, contrebande et dépendance : Le cri d'alarme des députés sur la question du médicament

The issue of medication was a central topic of discussion among parliamentarians during the committee review of the Ministry of Health's 2026 budget. Several members of parliament denounced recurring shortages of essential medicines in public facilities, particularly in rural areas, forcing many patients to turn to private pharmacies or, worse, to the informal market.

The danger of the parallel market and the alert on the PNA

Elected officials are highlighting the proliferation of medications sold on the street, sourced from uncontrolled channels, which pose a major threat to public health. These products, often of dubious quality or expired, are nevertheless widely consumed due to a lack of affordable alternatives.

The MPs also raised the difficulties faced by the National Supply Pharmacy (PNA), which is confronted with logistical and financial problems that affect the regular delivery of products to health facilities.

In this regard, they called for the strengthening of the PNA's capacities, better stock planning, and the acceleration of the appointment to head the Senegalese Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency.

Rural coverage and pharmaceutical sovereignty

Another point raised was the poor pharmaceutical coverage in rural areas. In several localities, no pharmacy is available, making access to medication even more difficult for remote populations. Parliamentarians proposed the introduction of incentive measures to encourage pharmacists to set up practices in the interior of the country.

Finally, the issue of pharmaceutical sovereignty was raised. Members of Parliament called on the government to support local drug production in order to reduce dependence on imports and guarantee more stable and less expensive access to essential treatments.
