Velingara : Confirmation de Fièvre de la Vallée du Rift sur des chèvres à Saré Ndiobo

Regional technical services for Livestock, Environment, Public Hygiene, and Health, members of the Kolda Regional Epidemic Management Committee (CRGE), visited Saré Ndiobo yesterday, Thursday. This locality, situated one kilometer from Kandiaye (the main town of the Vélingara department), is on alert following the confirmation of Rift Valley Fever (RVF) cases in goats.

Dr. Mamadou Lamine Diallo, Regional Director of Livestock for Kolda, led the delegation. After a briefing with local leaders, he presented the CRGE's action plan to the press, pending approval by the Governor. This plan aims to strengthen awareness and treatment efforts to prevent any spread of the disease.

Emergency measures and prevention of transmission

Dr. Diallo specified that, as soon as the cases were confirmed, a team from the Vélingara department, led by the Livestock technical agent Thomas Thiaw, put in place preventive and management measures to contain the epizootic: treatment and spraying of infected animals with mosquito repellent products; isolation of infected animals to break the chain of contact with humans and healthy animals; vaccination of neighboring herds.

The population also received strict instructions to avoid human contamination: avoid any contact with the meat of infected animals; pasteurize milk before any consumption; sleep under impregnated mosquito nets to prevent transmission by mosquito bites; destroy larval sites by weeding the village.

The village chief, Mahamadou Diao, reassured the technicians about the community's cooperation: "Here, we do not have a tradition of consuming goat's milk, nor of selling a sick animal. Moreover, in our tradition, any village affected by an epidemic is generally isolated."

The mobilization of the CRGE is considered crucial, as Kandiaye is located less than 15 km from Diaobé, an important livestock market. There is a high risk of infected animals crossing departmental and national borders (with The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, and Guinea).

For now, no human cases of Rift Valley Fever have been detected in the Kolda region, where animal and human health services are conducting a large-scale awareness campaign.
