VIH : le Ministère de la Santé fait le point et appelle à la vigilance sans stigmatisation
Following debates and questions related to HIV transmission, the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene (MSHP) has broken its silence to provide clarification and reassure the public.
HIV, the virus responsible for AIDS, is an infection that is transmitted through three main routes: unprotected sexual intercourse, contact with infected blood, and mother-to-child transmission.
Senegal, under the coordination of the National AIDS Control Council (CNLS), has implemented a national strategy for HIV prevention and care. This strategy is based on prevention, testing, and universal access to antiretroviral treatment. According to the Ministry, these efforts have led to major progress: nearly 9 out of 10 people living with HIV now know their status, and more than 92% of those on treatment are no longer transmitting the virus. This situation has contributed to a decrease in new infections and a significant improvement in the quality of life for patients.
The Ministry of Public Health and Hygiene (MSHP) reminds the public that HIV testing is available in public health facilities and through approved partners. This service is free, voluntary, and confidential, and is a crucial tool for early intervention.
People who test positive receive effective and free treatment in all hospitals and health centers across the country's 14 regions. An undetectable viral load means that patients can no longer transmit the virus, including from mother to child during pregnancy.
The Ministry warns against any form of stigmatization, stressing that it can hinder access to care and endanger the lives of people living with HIV, especially children and adolescents.
Furthermore, it reaffirms the commitment of health authorities to guarantee quality care while respecting human dignity, confidentiality, and medical ethics. Finally, the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene (MSHP) calls for collective mobilization and national solidarity to effectively continue the fight against HIV/AIDS.
