45 jours de luxe, 6 mois de prison : Un Chauffeur de "War Gaïndé" vole une moto pour payer l'hôtel
The Thiès court ruled this Monday, November 17th, in a peculiar theft case. S. Guèye, a driver of a "war gaïndé" (public transport bus), was sentenced to six months in prison for stealing a Jakarta motorcycle.
The case began when S. Guèye rented a hotel room in Thiès for 45 days, without having the necessary funds to pay the bill.
Faced with the hotel manager who was demanding payment at the end of the stay, S. Guèye devised a plan to settle his debt.
S. Guèye hired a Jakarta motorcycle driver named Amath for a ride in the Som district. Once they arrived, the accused asked Amath to buy cigarettes at the shop.
Taking advantage of the absence of the jakartaman, S. Guèye fled with the motorcycle and sold it to pay for his hotel stay.
Arrested after a complaint and placed under a detention order, S. Guèye admitted the facts in court, confessing to having stolen the motorcycle in order to settle his hotel debt.
The public prosecutor had requested an eight-month prison sentence. The judge found him guilty of theft and sentenced him to six months in prison. He was also ordered to pay 180,000 CFA francs in damages to the plaintiff (the driver, Amath).
