60 ans après, Thiès se dote de feux tricolores
After several decades of absence, traffic lights have made their grand return to the railway capital. On Wednesday, December 24, 2025, the Mayor of Thiès, Dr. Babacar Diop, officially inaugurated the traffic lights, marking a significant step in the modernization of the urban traffic network.
For this first phase of the program, launched in 2024, five intersections are now operational. These include the intersections at Lat-Dior Stadium, EDK, the bus station, the Shell station–Malick Sy High School, and Maniang Soumaré Stadium. According to the Mayor, this achievement is the culmination of a long process spanning two to three years, requiring in-depth studies, securing funding, and awarding a contract with a total estimated cost of 300 million CFA francs.
The momentum continues with phase 2, planned for 2025. The contract has already been awarded to the same company, and work should start no later than February 2026. This stage will concern the intersections of the Promenade des Thiessois, the Foukki Bounte level crossing, the Central Police station and the Nguinth roundabout.
As for phase 3, its funding is included in the 2026 budget. It will cover the areas of the regional hospital, Robinet Bagarre, the racecourse, and the gas station in Hersent. Two additional intersections, not included in the initial plan, will be added to these sites: the one at the former Kawsara restaurant and the one located between the Lat-Dior stadium and the Grand Standing neighborhood on the two new roads leading to the toll highway.
For Dr. Babacar Diop, the return of traffic lights, sixty years after their disappearance, represents a major opportunity to strengthen road safety, improve traffic flow, and enhance user mobility in a city that has been facing a surge in traffic congestion for several years. Beyond traffic regulation, these lights also contribute to the modernization of Thiès.
The Mayor of Thiès reaffirmed his ambition to transform the railway town into a truly modern city worthy of the name "metropolis." This vision includes the rehabilitation of the road network, the strengthening of public lighting for universal coverage, and the paving of streets, avenues, public squares, and neighborhoods.
On the ground, the commissioning of the traffic lights was welcomed by Jakarta motorcycle drivers, bus station drivers, taxi drivers, as well as representatives from CETUD and ANASER. All urged road users to strictly adhere to the traffic signals, ensuring smoother traffic flow and a significant reduction in accidents in the city of Thiès.
