Like other localities in the country, the department of Kanel celebrated the 66th anniversary of Senegal's independence on Saturday, April 4, 2026. The parade, held on National Route 2, which brought together delegations from the twelve municipalities of the administrative district, was notable for the strong turnout of local residents and numerous service providers, featuring vibrant and colorful performances that showcased the cultural expression of the area.

After the review of the troops by Captain Camara, commander of the Matam gendarmerie and the prefect of the department, Cheikh Ahmadou Ndoye, the civil and military parade began with the performance of the majorettes followed by the marchers from schools and several socio-economic groups, including: livestock farmers, farmers, fishermen, motorcycle taxi drivers, professional workers, youth and women's associations.

In his speech, the prefect expressed his great satisfaction after proudly witnessing "this impeccable parade which brought together elements of the defense and security forces and various components of the community."

He said he was particularly pleased with this beautiful parade, a true illustration of the concept of an army-nation, and warmly congratulated the commander of the gendarmerie in Matam as well as the commander of the troops for their excellent coordination.

The prefect also praised the quality of the parade participants' performances, as well as the massive turnout of the local population, which gave the event a festive and popular atmosphere. Taking this opportunity, he emphasized the considerable sacrifices and efforts that the Defense and Security Forces make daily to ensure security and maintain public order, sometimes at the cost of their lives.

He emphasized the commitment and determination of the department's gendarmerie brigade commanders, who, under the supervision of their superiors, work tirelessly to protect people and their property throughout the department. The prefect also urged residents to provide support and active cooperation to the Defense and Security Forces (FDS) to contribute to the success of their mission in a region facing emerging security challenges and threats.

He reiterated that the government is aware of these challenges and is working continuously to strengthen the necessary resources, personnel and security network.

Finally, he called for increased synergy between the population and the security forces, in line with this year's theme: "The security forces, partners of the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games".
