The parish of Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus in Affiniam, one of the largest in the diocese of Ziguinchor, resonated with the rhythm of the Feast of the Ascension. Presiding over this celebration as part of his pastoral visit, Bishop Jean-Baptiste Valter Manga made a strong appeal for peace, unity, and reconciliation among the basic ecclesial communities.

A homily focused on communion

In his homily, the Bishop of Ziguinchor emphasized the need to overcome misunderstandings in order to build a united church capable of carrying out its pastoral and community projects. "Peace remains an essential pillar for the spiritual and human development of the parish," he reminded them.

Addressing the 31 confirmands, Bishop Manga urged them to remain firm in the faith and to strengthen catechesis, in order to become living witnesses of Christ.

Meeting with the Affiniam community

The Ascension Day celebration in Affiniam followed a pastoral visit by the bishop of Ziguinchor to this area of the Bignona department. Yesterday, Wednesday, the bishop met with parishioners and visited the site designated for the construction of the rectory. The parishioners expressed their concerns, particularly the reopening of the Catholic school in Affiniam and the need for a rectory near the church to strengthen the pastoral presence.

His Grace also prayed in the grotto of Our Lady of Fatima and blessed the place of prayer called "the Calvary", before sharing the recitation of the rosary with the faithful.

A memorable visit to Djilapao

Despite the difficulties in accessing the church, he celebrated Mass and encouraged the people to become more involved in community life, particularly calling on women to play their full role in revitalizing the local church.

This stage was also marked by a visit to the museum threatened with closure, where Bishop Manga said he was amazed by the works of art on display.
