"We are working to reorient Senegal's priorities. I pledge here that employment policy will be one of our priorities and thousands of jobs will be created," he declared emphatically to the parliamentarians.
Thousands of jobs announced, but without individual promises
Ousmane Sonko, however, sought to qualify his remarks by emphasizing the importance of economic realism, clarifying that he could not guarantee a job to every citizen, while reaffirming the government's commitment to significantly stimulating the job market. "I cannot guarantee everyone a job, but we will create thousands of jobs for young people," he stated. According to him, this recovery strategy is based on a collective and inclusive approach, directly involving the government, the private sector, and the country's various economic partners.
The Prime Minister also stressed the urgent need to strengthen economic sovereignty by increasing the share of national actors in the productive sector, without excluding international investors. "We have prioritized national interests, which does not mean we are going to separate ourselves from foreigners. We are organizing ourselves to ensure that the Senegalese share is substantial," he explained. In this spirit of co-development, Ousmane Sonko called for a better structuring of the national private sector, which he considers the true central lever for growth and reducing unemployment.
Towards a law on economic patriotism
The key announcement of this major address remains the preparation of a draft law on economic patriotism. This legislation will aim to promote the local anchoring of industrial and commercial activities and strengthen the country's economic sovereignty. The Prime Minister emphasized that the success of this transformative policy will depend on the private sector's ability to better organize itself with the strategic support of the public authorities. "A well-structured private sector must be supported by its government," he concluded, calling for immediate and joint mobilization to transform the structures of the economy and sustainably meet the expectations of young people.
