Autonomie énergétique : Tivaouane met en chantier une centrale solaire pour la grande mosquée
In Tivaouane, work has begun on a 10 MW solar power plant to ensure the energy independence of the Seydi El Hadji Malick Sy Grand Mosque. Located on 17 hectares spread across several neighborhoods, the infrastructure received community approval after validation of the environmental and social impact study in October 2024 and a public hearing held on November 18, 2025. The affected communities have been compensated, in accordance with the recommendations of the Caliph General and official procedures.
The project, led by the Jama'atou Nour Assouniya association in partnership with local and religious authorities, aims to meet the mosque's energy needs and feed any surplus into the national grid. It should help reduce electricity costs and fund the mosque's maintenance.
The local communities, having given their consent, are now expressing strong expectations for tangible benefits: youth employment, electrification of neighboring areas, and local development. These prospects, while desirable, do not yet constitute formal commitments.
This project illustrates a model of partnership that reconciles energy autonomy, environmental sustainability and community integration, while also being part of the national strategy for promoting renewable energies.
