« Barça wala Barsakh » : une tragédie évitée au large de Dakar
After the terrible tragedy in Ngazobil, Libération reveals major dismantling operations in Saint-Louis and Dakar, linked to the "Barça wala Barsakh" phenomenon.
The Ngazobil massacre
On the night of December 23-24, 2025, a pirogue carrying nearly 200 migrants from Foundiougne to Spain capsized off the coast of Ngazobil beach, near Joal. Twelve bodies were recovered from the shore, and 32 people were rescued, including 20 Senegalese, 5 Gambians (including 2 girls), and 7 Guineans from Conakry (including 4 girls and 1 baby). More than 150 passengers remain missing. According to eyewitness accounts, the pirogue was overturned by strong winds and rough seas, the newspaper reports.
Dismantling of a network in Saint-Louis
Meanwhile, the same source reports, law enforcement conducted an operation in Saint-Louis. Two suspected organizers, Mouhamadou Mballo and Cheikh Tidiane Ba, were arrested and brought before the Financial Judicial Pool (PJF) on charges of attempted migrant smuggling, fraud, and criminal conspiracy. The network had established a sophisticated logistical operation, housing several migrants in neighborhoods such as Khar Yallah and Pikine, in exchange for sums ranging from 500,000 to 600,000 CFA francs per person. During the searches, navigation equipment, engines, and fuel were seized.
Rescue off the coast of Dakar
Finally, the French Navy averted another tragedy on December 23rd by rescuing 174 migrants off the coast of Dakar. These passengers, who had departed from The Gambia, were disembarked at the Admiral Faye Gassama Naval Base before being handed over to the appropriate authorities for further care, Libération reports.
