Bassin du fleuve Gambie : des niveaux d’eau contrastés, vigilance maintenue

The Tambacounda-Kédougou Water Resources Brigade published its hydrological bulletin on the evolution of water levels in the Gambia River and its tributaries on Monday, September 15, 2025. The data reveal a contrasting situation depending on the station, marked by increases in some areas and decreases in others.

Tributaries under surveillance

At the Diaguiri station (upstream from Mako), the water level rose sharply, reaching 4.89 meters, an increase of 79 cm in 24 hours. This level, however, was lower than that recorded at the same time last year (5.70 meters).

At Afia Pont (Thiokoye), the trend is the opposite: the level has fallen to 2.01 meters, down 11 cm compared to yesterday and significantly lower than the 4.33 meters observed in 2024.

The Diahra Pont station recorded a slight rise of 14 cm, reaching 1.69 meters, while at Goumbayel, a drop of 3 cm was noted, setting the level at 1.96 meters.

At Niokolo Koba, the level stands at 5.90 meters, down 6 cm from the previous day, but well below the 8.25 meters recorded at the same time last year. At Sinthiou Malème, the water no longer reaches the measuring scale.

The Gambia River between falling and rising

In the commune of Kédougou, the level recorded this morning is 6.89 meters, a decline of 19 cm in 24 hours. This level remains close to the alert level set at 7 meters, which calls for particular vigilance. Notably, on the same date in 2024, the river peaked at 6.28 meters, a level slightly lower than today.

In Mako, the situation is evolving differently, with a significant rise of 74 cm, bringing the level to 5.10 meters, compared to 4.36 meters the day before. This increase brings the current level closer to the alert level of 6 meters.

In Simenti, the day's data were not available, but yesterday the station showed a reading of 8 meters, well below the critical threshold of 13 meters. For comparison, the river reached 12.10 meters on the same date in 2024.

Finally, in Gouloumbou, a slight drop was observed: the level fell from 8.21 meters to 8.18 meters, but remains lower than the 8.88 meters recorded the previous year.

Caution advised

These variations reflect the current dynamics of the Gambia River and its tributaries during this rainy season. Hydrological authorities are reiterating the importance of vigilance, particularly in Kédougou and Mako, where levels are approaching alert thresholds.

The Tambacounda Water Resources Brigade continues to monitor the situation daily in order to anticipate any risk of flooding and better inform local populations.
