The Tambacounda-Kédougou Water Resources Brigade published its hydrological bulletin on Friday, September 19, 2025, on the evolution of water levels in the Gambia River and its tributaries. Data collected this morning at 8:00 a.m. reveal a general upward trend, with certain areas of concern.

A worrying situation in Kédougou

At the Kédougou station, the water level reached 7.50 meters, compared to 6.50 meters yesterday. This increase of 1 meter places the level above the alert level set at 7 meters. At the same time in 2024, the river peaked at 5.75 meters. The authorities are therefore calling for vigilance against the risk of flooding.

The Gambia River upstream from Mako

Several stations also recorded notable increases:

1. Diaguiri: 4.96 m against 4.19 m the day before, i.e. +77 cm (4.93 m in 2024).
2. Afia Pont (Thiokoye): 5.13 m against 4.19 m, i.e. +94 cm (3.72 m in 2024).
3. Diahra Pont: 3.23 m against 1.73 m, i.e. +1.50 m.
4. Niokolo Koba: slight drop to 5.87 m against 5.88 m yesterday (8.30 m in 2024).
5. Goumbayel and Sinthiou Malème: data not available.

In Mako, the river recorded 5.05 m this morning, a rise of 13 cm compared to the previous day, but a level lower than that of 2024 (5.45 m). The alert level remains set at 6 m.

Levels are improving in Simenti and Gouloumbou

1. Simenti: 9.75 m compared to 9.29 m yesterday, i.e. +46 cm. However, the level remains below last year's (11.80 m). The alert level is set at 13 m.
2. Gouloumbou: 8.64 m compared to 8.45 m yesterday, i.e. +19 cm. In comparison, the river reached 9.67 m on the same date in 2024.

Call for vigilance

Overall, water levels are rising significantly, particularly in Kédougou, where the alert level has already been exceeded. Hydrological services are closely monitoring the situation and recommend that local residents exercise extra caution.
