Bassin du fleuve Gambie : le niveau d’eau poursuit sa baisse, quelques stations en hausse
The Tambacounda-Kédougou Water Resources Brigade published its hydrological bulletin on the water trends in the Gambia River and its tributaries this Wednesday, September 24, 2025. The measurements taken at 8 a.m. confirm a general downward trend, with some stations recording a slight increase.
In Diaguiri, the water level has receded significantly, reaching 3.48 m compared to 4.64 m the day before, a drop of 116 cm. On the same day last year, the level was at 4.64 m.
The situation is similar at Afia Pont (Thiokoye), where the level fell to 3.27 m from 4.26 m on September 23, a drop of 99 cm. In comparison, the river reached 6.15 m on the same date in 2024.
On the other hand, a slight rise of 10 cm was recorded at Diahra Pont, with a current level of 1.67 m.
In Niokolo Koba, no measurements were taken this morning, but yesterday the level was at 5.78 m, well below the 8.42 m observed on September 24, 2024.
As for the Goumbayel and Sinthiou Malème stations, the level is now too low to reach the scale.
In Kédougou, the water level is dropping sharply: 5.36 m this morning compared to 6.36 m yesterday, a decrease of one meter. Last year, at the same time, the river reached 5.55 m. The alert level there is set at 7 m, a threshold that remains distant for the time being.
In Simenti, the trend is also downward, with a level of 10.59 m compared to 10.75 m the day before (-16 cm). This figure remains, however, lower than that of the previous year (12.20 m). The alert level is 13 m.
In Mako, the recorded level is 4.79 m, a drop of 35 cm compared to yesterday. In 2024, the level was 5.10 m. Here, the alert level is set at 6 m.
Finally, the Gouloumbou station recorded a rise of 11 cm, reaching 9.49 m compared to 9.38 m on September 23. This level remains, however, below the 10.23 m observed in 2024. The alert level there is 12 m.
Overall, today's bulletin reveals that most stations in the Gambia River Basin are experiencing a significant drop in water levels compared to the previous day, but also compared to last year. Only a few stations, such as Diahra Pont and Gouloumbou, are showing an upward trend.
Hydrological authorities are calling for continued vigilance, particularly in areas where water levels could rise due to rainfall upstream.
