Bilan hydrologique du bassin du fleuve Gambie : des tendances contrastées observées
The Tambacounda-Kédougou Water Resources Brigade published its daily hydrological bulletin this morning on the evolution of water levels in the Gambia River basin and its tributaries. The measurements, taken at 8 a.m., reveal a mixed situation, with significant increases at some stations and notable decreases at others.
Tributaries with strong variation
- Diaguiri station (upstream of Mako): the water level reached 5.36 m, up 23 cm compared to the previous day. On the same date in 2024, the level was at 4.28 m, confirming a significant increase this year.
- Afia Pont station (Thiokoye): also a strong increase, with a level of 6.06 m compared to 5.34 m the day before, an increase of 72 cm. Last year, the measurement showed 4.73 m.
- Diahra Pont station: On the other hand, the trend is downward. The level fell to 2.45 m, 86 cm less than on September 30. No comparable data was available for the same period in 2024.
- Niokolo Koba station: slight drop observed with 5.63 m compared to 5.69 m the day before (–6 cm). In comparison, the level was much higher last year (8.21 m).
- Goumbayel and Sinthiou Malème stations: the levels did not reach the scale, preventing any measurement.
The Gambia River under surveillance
- In Kédougou: the river is at 5.61 m, a marked drop of 1.15 m compared to September 30 (6.76 m). However, the level remains slightly higher than that observed last year (5.42 m). The alert level is set at 7 m.
- In Simenti: no data available on October 1, but the day before, the river was at 9.19 m, compared to 12.61 m at the same time in 2024. The alert level there is 13 m.
- In Mako: the level reached 5.18 m, a slight increase of 11 cm compared to the previous day. However, it remains below the 5.75 m recorded last year. The alert level there is set at 6 m.
- In Gouloumbou: relative stability at 9.73 m, only +1 cm compared to the previous day. In 2024, the level reached 11.11 m on the same date. The alert level is 12 m.
Maintained vigilance
These data reflect significant fluctuations across stations, confirming the influence of recent rainfall on some tributaries and the gradual retreat of the river in other areas. While some localities are recording significant increases, the majority of stations are still below alert levels, which for the time being reduces the immediate risk of flooding.
The Tambacounda-Kédougou Water Resources Brigade, however, calls for continued vigilance, especially in areas where levels remain close to critical thresholds.
