Burkina : Le capitaine Traoré met fin au projet de moustiques génétiquement modifiés contre le palu
The "Target Malaria" project is over! Captain Ibrahim Traoré's Burkina Faso has decided to end this program, which cultivated genetically modified mosquitoes to combat malaria. The reasons for this decision are clearly not mentioned.
The Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation (MESRI) simply announced in a press release the definitive end of the project throughout the national territory, in accordance with two administrative decisions taken on August 18 and 22, 2025.
The enclosures containing the genetically modified mosquitoes were sealed
According to the document, the enclosures containing the genetically modified mosquitoes have been sealed since August 18 and all samples will be destroyed according to an established protocol.
The ministry also announced that the genetically modified male mosquitoes, without genetic drive, which had been released in the village of Souroukoudingan (Hauts-Bassins region), were carefully taken care of by the competent technical services.
It must be said that this "Target Malaria" project sparked a real debate in Burkinabe public opinion.
