Carfentanil : la «drogue pour éléphant» qui menace le Sénégal
The newspaper L'Observateur, which raised the alarm, reports that on the night of February 26-27, the Khar Yalla Research Brigade (BR) arrested O. Fall (42 years old) in possession of sixteen carfentanil tablets. This is the first time this substance has been formally identified on national territory by the National Drug Analysis Laboratory (LNAD), the same source indicates.
The newspaper warns that carfentanil is not an ordinary drug. This synthetic opioid was originally designed to anesthetize large animals such as rhinos and elephants. Its potency is formidable: it is 100 times stronger than fentanyl and 10,000 times more potent than morphine. It is so dangerous that a dose of just 2 mg can kill an adult, and even accidental exposure can be fatal.
According to initial findings of the investigation, O. Fall, a vendor residing in Castors, was stopped while riding his motorcycle. During a routine search, investigators discovered sixteen white tablets in his pocket. The suspect initially tried to downplay the incident, claiming he had bought them "by chance" from a drug vendor in the Rail-Ba housing project. However, the scientific analysis conducted by the Pharmaceutical and Toxicological Division had a bombshell effect, confirming that the tablets were indeed carfentanil.
While the country is already grappling with the spread of cannabis and the diversion of prescription drugs, as highlighted by the Groupe Futurs Médias (GFM) newspaper, the emergence of this substance marks a worrying escalation. In the United States, carfentanil, in particular, has been linked to a 720% surge in opioid-related deaths in recent years.
Charged with conspiracy and possession of psychotropic substances for trafficking purposes, O. Fall remains in police custody. The investigation continues with the support of the Criminal Operations and Intelligence Division (DOCRTIS) to trace the supply chain, identify the supplier based in the HLM Rail-Ba housing project, and understand how this extremely dangerous product infiltrated the Senegalese market, GFM reports.
