Casamance : 12 mai 1886, mémoire et appel à la paix, la main tendue de Mangoukouro (MFDC)
May 12, 1886, remains a date etched in the history of Casamance: on that day, the region shifted from Portuguese influence to French rule. More than a simple colonial transition, this date symbolizes the upheavals and suffering endured by a land that has never ceased to defend its dignity, according to Yaya Diatta, a founding member of Mangoukouro.
On the occasion of this commemoration, voices are rising to remind everyone that the history of Casamance must not be forgotten. "We have a duty to teach the new generation these glorious pages of our past," affirms Yaya Diatta, a founding member of Mangoukouro, the political wing of the MFDC.
Beyond the historical reminder, it is a call for peace that resonates. Casamance, a land of welcome and fraternity, longs to turn the page on suffering. Inspired by Father Diamacoune, who placed his movement under the emblematic figures of Queen Aline Sitoé Diatta and Joan of Arc, local activists emphasize that non-violence is the only lasting path. "Violence is the expression of despair," he taught, inviting everyone to choose hope. Seminars dedicated to non-violence are multiplying, carrying a clear message: Casamance has the right to live, to believe in its future, and to find peace.
Today, an outstretched hand is extended to the authorities: it is high time that history not only serves as memory, but as a driving force for reconciliation. Casamance cannot remain trapped in eternal suffering. It demands its right to peace, hope, and restored dignity.
