Casamance : L'inquiétude des députés sur la sécurité et le processus de paix

During the examination of the Ministry of the Armed Forces' draft 2026 budget this Saturday, MPs expressed serious concerns about the situation in Casamance, where security remains fragile despite the ongoing peace process.

In committee, they questioned Minister Birame Diop about the disappearance, or even kidnapping, of a Senegalese soldier in the region. They sought clarification on how the ministry had supported the family and on the measures taken to ensure the protection of the armed forces in the field.

In addition, the MPs requested detailed information on the current state of the peace process in Casamance, stressing the importance of ensuring stability in this strategic area for the country.

Minister Birame Diop assured that "all measures are underway to secure the release of the captive soldier" and that the authorities are closely monitoring the case.

Regarding the peace process, he recalled the State's constant commitment to maintaining dialogue and supporting local initiatives aimed at strengthening security and social cohesion in Casamance.

The minister also emphasized the crucial role of the military presence and cooperation with local forces in preventing incidents and ensuring the safety of the population. According to him, the actions undertaken aim to guarantee both the protection of soldiers and the continuity of the peace process.

Following this, some members of parliament called for increased logistical and human resources in the region, as well as closer monitoring of the families of soldiers on missions. These recommendations reflect a desire to consolidate peace and security in the long term.
