Catfishing à Thiès : la belle « Aïda Faye » était un vigile de 21 ans
In Thiès, a bizarre case of digital identity theft on social media led to the arrest of a 21-year-old security guard. The man, identified as ML Faye, was taken into custody at the Nginth police station, reports L'Observateur.
It all started on Facebook, the same source explains, where the victim, Mr. Diop, fell under the spell of a certain "Aïda Faye." A virtual romance developed through messages, and, moved by compassion for his "partner" who claimed to be experiencing serious financial difficulties, Mr. Diop transferred several sums of money to her via Wave, totaling 100,000 CFA francs.
Suspicion arises when the mysterious Aïda systematically refuses WhatsApp video calls. Sensing a scam, Mr. Diop manages to track down his interlocutor and discovers to his astonishment that the woman he was infatuated with is actually a young man. The victim himself leads the imposter to the police station.
The investigation of the suspect's phone revealed the extent of the scheme: Faye managed several Facebook and WhatsApp accounts under female identities to seduce multiple men simultaneously. He used voice changers to send convincing voice messages in order to extract money from his "suitors," reports the newspaper of the Future Media Group.
When questioned by police, the security guard readily admitted to the acts, attempting to justify them by citing his own financial difficulties. He will now have to answer for his actions in court on charges of fraud and digital identity theft.
