Heurts à l'UCAD : 105 arrestations, l'étudiant décédé aurait sauté du pavillon
The central police station in Dakar, under the command of Divisional Commissioner Mamadou Tendeng, and its secondary police stations, including that of Point-E, proceeded on Monday to arrest 105 individuals during the violent clashes that occurred at Cheikh Anta Diop University (UCAD).
According to Seneweb sources, all those arrested were taken into custody at the Urban Security headquarters for acts of vandalism, destruction and damage to private and public property, participation in an unauthorized demonstration, insults, violence, and assault against security forces. More than 22 police officers were injured during the demonstrations.
Origin of the crisis: mandatory ticket payments
It all began on February 9, 2026, when the management of the Dakar University Social Services Center (COUD) announced the reopening of university restaurants after a 72-hour closure. This resumption reflected the State's commitment to fulfilling its social responsibilities for the benefit of students.
However, the management called on all students to act responsibly while specifying that payment for the ticket was mandatory.
In response, the student associations at UCAD maintained their "No Ticket Days" slogan, demanding the unconditional reopening of restaurants. This situation led to significant tension on campus, culminating in police intervention following acts of vandalism perpetrated by students.
Assessment of the damage
The protesters set fire to two vehicles on the road leading to Pavilion B (Zone A) as well as a COUD motorcycle. Materials within the COUD compound were also burned. The situation on campus remained very tense, with protesters expressing their intention to vandalize the COUD administration offices and university restaurants.
