« Comment un réseau de faussaires exploite les failles de l’état civil » (maire)
In an interview with L'Observateur , Banding Fossar Souane, mayor of the commune of Karantaba, in the Sédhiou region, denounced the existence of a vast network of forgers specializing in the production of fake birth certificates. He reacted after the recent dismantling of the network by the police, who arrested a former soldier, I. Faty, at the heart of this affair. Most of the documents seized bore the stamp and seal of his town hall.
The councilor stated that his municipality had been on alert for several years and had already received numerous complaints on the matter. He had already filed a complaint against an unknown person. According to him, the forgers were reproducing the signatures and stamps of a former civil registrar in his municipality.
To counter this fraud, the city hall has implemented a process of digitizing civil status documents, assigning each birth certificate a unique and verifiable number. Mr. Souane also announced his intention to join the case as a civil party.
The source from the daily newspaper of the Future Media Group stressed that this affair is the result of a double flaw: a deliberate exploitation of the weaknesses of the system by the forgers, but also a systemic dysfunction of the Senegalese state, which has not yet generalized an interconnected civil status system on a national scale.
