Cyberfraude : Une plainte de la Sonatel a permis l'arrestation, par la BR de Keur Massar, d'un hacker nigérian qui détournait des SMS
The Keur Massar research brigade has successfully dismantled a criminal network specializing in the fraudulent diversion of SMS notifications. This information was provided to Seneweb by Colonel Ibrahima Ndiaye, head of the National Gendarmerie's Communication and Public Relations Division.
It all started with a complaint from Sonatel.
It all began when Sonatel discovered the fraudulent use of a device to divert SMS notifications sent by popular apps like WhatsApp, TikTok, and Amazon. Individuals had set up a sophisticated system to route these notifications to users using local operator numbers, at rates far below the legally mandated prices. Faced with estimated losses of 5,005,960 FCFA, the telecom operator filed a complaint with the Keur Massar Criminal Investigation Brigade.
First raid in Colobane
On February 23, 2026, with the assistance of the Colobane research unit, the gendarmes made their first arrest in Colobane. The arrested individual was identified as the reseller of the SIM cards used by the fraudsters to commit their crimes. This decisive capture paved the way for the dismantling of the entire network in the Maristes neighborhood.
Indeed, the ongoing investigation led detectives to the Maristes school, where the criminal network had established its headquarters. A Nigerian national was arrested there. A search of the premises revealed the scale and sophistication of the operation. The gendarmes seized five computers, six telephone racks each containing twenty mobile phones, two routers, a BTS antenna, five power strips, and a signal amplifier.
All the seized material has been made available to the National Gendarmerie's Centre for Combating Digital Crime (CLCN) for exploitation and technical analysis.
The suspects are being prosecuted for conspiracy and fraud on electronic communication networks.
