Littoral de Dakar : pourquoi la Baie de Hann et Yoff sont les zones les plus polluées
In the ranking of the most polluted areas along Dakar's coastline, Hann Bay and Yoff come out on top. This assessment comes from Massata Ndao, Director of Marine Resource Management and Exploitation, who made it in an interview published last Thursday in Le Soleil. "We can link this pollution to a rapidly growing population in these coastal areas, and to non-existent or inadequate sanitation and waste treatment infrastructure," he stated.
For the Bay of Hann, the culprit is known: untreated industrial (chemical, tannery, slaughterhouse) and domestic (wastewater) discharges. It's important to know that 60% of Senegal's manufacturing industry is located along the Bay of Hann. Homes without drainage systems also discharge their wastewater into stormwater drainage canals through haphazard connections.
That's not all. "The pollution is also chemical, with heavy metals in concentrations far exceeding the standards," notes Massata Ndao. "The bay also suffers from a significant accumulation of plastic waste, both on the beach and on the seabed."
Yoff is faring little better, presenting "a rather unsavory image for several years now." On site, the director reports, "the waste has reached such a level that some parts of the coastline serve as garbage dumps, resulting in deplorable aesthetic and health impacts." Massata Ndao continues: "Just a short distance from the canoe landing point, a large sewer contaminates the seawater with its liquid discharge. As the meeting point of all the village canals, this open sewage conduit is also a dumping ground for rubble, plastic waste, horse manure, and construction debris."
