Décès de l’étudiant Abdoulaye Ba : Les députés de Pastef exigent la lumière sur les conditions d’intervention policière
The Pastef/Les Patriotes parliamentary group demanded on Friday that full light be shed on the conditions of the intervention of the security forces preceding the death of student Abdoulaye Ba, calling for thorough administrative and judicial investigations.
In a statement sent to Seneweb, these MPs offer their "deepest condolences" to the family of the deceased, the university community and the entire Senegalese people, following what they describe as a "tragic death".
They believe that the violent incidents that have occurred in the university space "call for a clear-sighted and responsible analysis", noting that "the physical violence and brutality inflicted on students tarnish the image of the public service responsible for maintaining order".
The parliamentary group stresses that the mission of the defense and security forces is to "protect people and property, in strict compliance with human rights and the rules of proportionate engagement", insisting that "any intervention must be within the framework of legality and restraint".
The MPs consider it "essential" that the Minister of the Interior launch "a thorough administrative investigation into the conditions of the police intervention on campus and the circumstances that led to the tragedy."
They also call on the Minister of Justice to "ensure rigorous monitoring of the judicial proceedings initiated, in order to establish any potential criminal liability and to shed full light on this matter, in strict compliance with the rule of law."
While acknowledging that the students' demands, particularly those relating to living and studying conditions, are "legitimate aspirations", the Pastef MPs call on all actors to take responsibility to preserve public heritage.
They condemn "any excessive and disproportionate use of force, as well as acts of vandalism directed against public property," advocating for "frank and constructive dialogue" to restore a peaceful atmosphere in universities.
